The Swain Department of Nursing at The Citadel offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program uniquely designed for cadets. Students begin by declaring biology as their major in their freshman year, receiving dedicated faculty advising to prepare them for nursing program acceptance. The selection process emphasizes not only academic excellence, with a required 3.0 GPA and strong performance in math and science, but also caregiving and leadership skills. The program is deliberately small, admitting only 24 cadets annually, and provides special consideration for veteran students. The curriculum progresses from nursing fundamentals in the sophomore year, through acute care applications in the junior year, and culminates in specialized population care and leadership training in the senior year.
